A Taste of New Orleans in Kansas City's River Market

August 5th, 2014 11:17 AM by AJ Gentry

It's always nice to see the unique events that come to Kansas City. From the Country Club Plaza's Art Fair to Brookside's Art Fair to Waldo's Falldo Crawldo, there is something for everyone. Our great city really just keeps getting better. We have world class museums, a five star advertsining community and the Crossroads Arts District where the world stops spinning the first Friday of every month. Kansas City is nothing short of AMAZING.

That tradition of awesomeness continues in the River Market this Friday, August 8th at the City Market. Check out the information below borrowed from the Facebook Event Page:

"The 2014 Crawfish Festival will bring back the flavors and soul of the south straight to the City Market. Live music will once again fill the air for all to enjoy while chowing down on traditional Cajun fare or a Louisiana delicacy: crawfish!

Tickets are $15 and are available at BrownPaperTickets.com.

6:00--Doors Open
7:00--Blue Orleans Band
8:30--Bon Ton Soul Accordion Band

Food will be available ranging from $6-$12, including:
--Crawfish jambalaya
--Crawfish etouffee
--Red Beans-n-rice
--Beignets

More details:

Richard Lucente, founding member of the Bon Ton Band and his wife Kiki, kicked off and paraded this festival through Kansas City in many forms and locations from 1983 through 2001 when the band retired. "For years we have been asked to bring back the Crawfish Festival and this was perfect timing to start the party back up with the Bon Ton Soul Accordion Band come back," stated Deb Churchill, VP-Property Manager. "The band had quite the following back in the day, so we are hoping this evening will get the street party started and let the good times roll again."

Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. to this festive, mid-summer Mardi Gras party that will offer something for everyone. Partake in the flavorful offerings of Cajun cuisine from the local owners Bryan and Monica Merker of Beignet located in the City Market: crawfish jambalaya, red beans-n-rice, crawfish etouffee, and fresh powdered sugar dusted beignets make this an authentic southern meal to remember. Dance the night away to the fun music and enjoy a cold drink.

Locally based band Blue Orleans will take the stage at 7:00 p.m. to kick off the party. Blue Orleans has been described as a "gumbo of zydeco, rock and roll, blues, reggae, and Caribbean music is pure good-time music, easily washed down with a couple stiff drinks on a warm summer night."

Headlining the night, the beloved Bon Ton Soul Accordion Band will take the stage at 8:30. The rowdy, rollicking, raucous Bon Ton Soul Accordion Band was a staple of the original Crawfish Fiesta and was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2014. The band retired in 2001, and has enjoyed an overwhelmingly positive reception since returning to the Kansas City music scene this spring.

Parking will be $5.00. Tickets to the event are $15 and are available in advance at brownpapertickets.com.

Tickets at the door the day of show are CASH ONLY."

If you are a fan of New Orleans food and festivities, you have to make it to this event. See you there!
